Bi-annual safety check

 Important — every 6 months

Toyota mandates a brake and clutch fluid safety inspection every six months, regardless of mileage. This can be combined with your regular interim or full service if the timing aligns, avoiding any additional charge.

Track & performance driving

Shorten oil change intervals

For frequent track use, consider changing engine oil every 3,000–4,000 miles rather than the standard 6,000 miles. High-load conditions degrade oil quality significantly faster.

Upgrade & replace brake fluid more often

Standard Toyota brake fluid has a lower boiling point than performance alternatives like Motul RBF 660. Track drivers should replace brake fluid annually and consider an upgrade. Brake pads should also be inspected after every track day.

Driveline oil changes — more frequently

With only ~0.45 L of oil in the rear differential, fluid degrades quickly under hard use. Many experienced owners change driveline oils (gearbox, diff, transfer box) every 10,000 km rather than waiting for the standard 24,000-mile interval.

Spark plug checks

While the official interval is 60,000 miles, owners using the car hard may prefer to inspect plugs every 20,000–30,000 miles to check for fouling caused by aggressive driving or fuelling changes.

Note: This schedule is based on Toyota’s published maintenance guidelines for the GR Yaris (GXPA16, 2020 onwards) and applies to the 2026 model year as a continuation of the same platform. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual and speak with an authorised Toyota service centre to confirm intervals for your specific driving conditions and region. Intervals may vary between markets (e.g. UK km/mile equivalents).

The bi-annual safety check. In addition to the annual service, Toyota recommends a safety check on the brake and clutch fluid every six months, which can often be conveniently combined with your Interim or Full service depending on your mileage.

Driveline fluids are the GR Yaris‘s hidden maintenance cost. The rear differential oil and transfer box oil each need inspecting every 12,000 miles and replacing every 24,000 miles (4 years), and brake and clutch fluid should be replaced every 24,000 miles or 2 years.

Track drivers need to deviate from the standard schedule. Aggressive driving puts more stress on the engine, brakes, and other components, so track users should consider increasing the frequency of services, particularly oil and filter changes, and consult with a qualified mechanic experienced with performance vehicles. Many owners in the GR community go further — changing driveline oils every 10,000 km rather than waiting for the standard interval, given how little oil the rear differential holds.

Spark plugs last longer than you might think. The official replacement interval for spark plugs is 60,000 miles — the NGK iridium plugs Toyota specifies are rated accordingly, though track-focused owners often inspect them earlier.

Always cross-reference with your owner’s manual, as intervals can vary slightly by market.
