Toyota’s European boss, Karl Schlicht, has confirmed that there will be a second generation of the popular sports coupe expected to be released in 2019. “The [Toyota 86] will carry on. The car serves a big purpose. We are not getting out of that business. Sporty cars go through their phases. It’s our intention to continue with that car. It’s at the stage where it’s being decided on the next one, then a chief engineer will be assigned and away we go”.
Karl hasn’t mentioned if there will be another joint venture between Toyota and Subaru but did say if the current car’s low of centre of gravity and low engine position were be to retained, having Subaru as a partner would be crucial.
